Wow this episode really hit home for me. Some of my fav movies in here.

Sorcerer: I only discovered this one a couple years ago and it's abs fantastic. I read that McQueen was considered for the role and that's about the only thing that could have made it better. But Scheider was fantastic.

The Terror: Harris was great. I stumbled onto the series by accident because it was on after something else.

The Thing: An all-time fav. Have seen it soooo many times and still go back to it. I'd also recommend the 2011 version which is kind of a prequel.

The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974): Another movie I can't believe I waited so long to see. Absolutely great and so many great actors in it, including Frank Costanza.

Dunkirk: Who doesn't love Tom Hardy?!

Hell or High Water (2016): My son turned me on to this one. Not bad at all.

The Revenant: Who doesn't love Tom Hardy?!?! :)

Drive to Survive: I had low expectations but it's really well done.

Great episode! Since you guys mentioned Bill Friedkin, I have to recommend his conversation with Marc Maron. Maron has had hundreds of fascinating conversations via his podcast, but the Friendkin interview is my absolute favorite.

I remember that episode with Friedkin, too. It was a really interesting and informative one!

Great show! I do recommend to watch parasite in black and white, Bong Joon Ho did say he original want to be just in black/white. Also “the host” and “breaking dogs never bite” is great films from Bong!

Fanastic Episode! If you like Willem Dafoe, check out 'The Hunter' (2011), a suspenseful and brooding film beautifully shot in my native Tasmania. Another watch-centric recommendation is 'The American' (2010) starring George Clooney and based on the fantastic book 'A very private gentleman' by Martin Booth. If I can speak to a general 'TGN taste', these may both be up your respective alleys. Keep up the amazing work!

There's something about The American...I can just watch it over and over (while most of my family can't stand how slow it is). But I love it. I didn't realize it was based on a book... heading to order a copy right now.

Is there a comprehensive list of TGN Film Club picks?

Dunkirk. Sorry, but that's a film that tries way too hard to the point of being boring. You want to like it because it's 'critically acclaimed' but it's two hours you'll never get back.

Despite not being a movie enthusiast, I really enjoyed the conversation. Especially the depth and enthusiasm Tim brought to the discussion was great. Thanks for sparking some curiosity outside my wheelhouse! My favorite Film Club episode so far

If you like Tom Hardy’s work, check out the mini series Taboo (2017). Not technically a movie, I concede but visually and cerebrally pleasing. Set in the late 1700’s, it is dark and brooding, almost steampunk in its feel. It poses a great historical “What if…?”, in this case if the East India company established a commercial colony in Western Canada.

Another solid Film Club, but I have one criticism: I would submit that Film Club should not feature any movies that none of the hosts have seen. I appreciate what Tim was trying to do bringing Taylor's input into the discussion, but either watch the movie beforehand or pick something else. Listening to a third-hand account of this (admittedly good) movie was pretty unsatisfying, for me at least.

Jason's note about Drive to survive made me think of this article I'd just read on The Atlantic's website: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2021/10/formula-1-drive-to-survive/619814/?utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share Amanda Mull describes her conversion from nil interest to F1 fandom through the series. Personally, I got turned off of F1 in the early 2000s. Three hours of parade laps with the only passing taking place in the pits got old. Perhaps the on-track action is better now, but give me MotoGP and day of the week (especially Sundays).

Was pleasantly surprised to hear "Driven to Survive" mentioned in the final notes (and from Jason of all things).

3rd season will be all the more poignant considering the 2021 Indycar season Romain Grosjean has had. Actually, both he and Magnussen have had a pretty successful transition out of F1 into the next chapters of their careers. Grosjean has already said he's planning on moving his family to the states. He's found a very happy new home in the Indycar series.

Really great episode and as an ex film student I really enjoyed the level of nerdery that Tim brought to the show. I think he should sit in as a guest presenter for every film club.

On the theme (ok quite rough) theme of Deliverance that you had a while back, have you seen movies like Calibre , The Ritual and the new German movie Prey ? All slightly different but with all our basically escape from the wilderness movies.

Love the pod and keep up the great work.

Another great Tom Hardy performance is "Locke" - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2692904/. Essentially a one man show, minimal but gripping.

Thanks for a great episode! Enjoyed the brotherly banter and fun!

I too think Tom Hardy is one of the greatest actors right now. He was brilliant in Dunkirk as well (with a very TGN white sailors turtleneck sweater in wool). But let’s not forget his MySpace:

Have a great day and remember, the internet never forgets :)
