James, decide if you want an open top or not. MGB is without a doubt the most obvious, and likely best choice. Well screwed together, easy to work on, and lots of aftermarket support. That said, the NA Miata does everything better. Outside choice would be an Alfa roadster. The Alfa could be one of the best handling solid axle cars out there. Stay away from the SPICA injection, the Italian is going to be enough work even with Webers... If you're OK with a roof, early 944's are still somewhat attainable, 318i, even an early big bumper with the 2 valve head is still great. A MK I Scirocco is a tiny, fun car that you won't see everywhere.
Jason, if the timing belt got replaced, the timing on the injector pump was likely checked and adjusted. Diesel injection timing is similar to gas ignition timing. A few degrees can make a big difference. Enjoy the whistle and the heartbeat at idle!
The only thing I didn't like about that Bremont/Bamford watch (aside from the 43mm size) is the California dial. I'm not a fan of that style of dial. Otherwise, I love the blue on black look.
That Doxa Army Watches of Switzerland Edition, as well as Doxa's carbon model, are both spectacularly intriguing pieces. But I just can't get over the prices. The Doxa ceramic is barely cheaper than the Tudor BB Ceramic. TGN has mentioned the Victorinox carbon, which is just $1225, compared with the Doxa carbon's $4790 msrp. Christopher Ward sells a carbon diver for $1275. I know these LEs from smaller brands don't get the economies of scale, but I can't help but wonder if they're taking advantage of some hype to squeeze out some short-term profit. Yes, I totally want them to take the profit they can earn. But I really, really long for the day when Christopher Ward, Raven, Nodus, Oak & Oscar, or some other innovative small brand comes out with a $1500 ceramic diver and turns this material into something a bit more mainstream.
I agree wholeheartedly! I’d love to get my hands on this Doxa Army, but not at that price. I’ve got a Nodus Sector Pilot Phantom and I love it and I’d love to see a Raven Trekker in ceramic.
Go for the Spitfire or MGB—more fun than you can have for less than the price of many watches. Everything feels fast in a small slow roadster and doing the maintenance can be part of the charm.
Just getting started on this episode with a suggestion for James. A vintage car; especial of British origin can be a headache, and not an ideal first step into the market. Might I suggest a NA Miata. All the fun without the Prince of Darkness (Lucas) issues.
But James, I believe its an 21mm lug width on the Aquastar ;) Highlight of the year for me and fairly priced in my opinion! Looking forward to you're upcoming review! I find the dial really mesmerizing, never have seen a sunburst effect as great as on the DS.
Hodinkee Shop needs to produce some 21mm UTE Grey Nato now haha ;)
I picked up the black/blue Timex Q GMT. I don't think it was an exclusive - I picked mine up from TheIconic. It's my first Timex and I'm impressed - a ton of fun for the price and it feels quite well made. I'm usually fairly immune to impulse new-release buys, but the blue got under my skin somehow.
I got the black version on the black tropic and was disappointed. The case is not really black, more a VERY shiny grey, almost a mirror finish. The acrylic crystal is quite domed and also very reflective. Together when worn it was like looking at the back of a highly polished spoon! It just wasn’t for me and was returned within the hour 🤷♂️
I felt exactly the same way about the Pepsi and ordered it as soon as I saw the Hodinkee article. The applied indicies, date only and all polished hands elevate this Q above the three hander. It just looks like a much more expensive watch. The bracelet is great as well as long as you are ok with a stamped clasp (which I am as it makes for a thinner clasp). Mine arrived today and I am way more impressed than I expected to be. While I won’t be jumping off a dock with it, (despite the 50m of water resistance) it will definitely be the watch I wear the most this summer.
I actually really like the bamford LE with the exception of the California dial.

Good episode guys!
I've been listening to too many podcasts from the same universe lately because every time they said matte ceramic I heard Matt Hranek
Also I'm getting the same itch as James for something buzzy and mechanically unsound. I blame Philip Toledano
Hi guys, you're probably aware of the watch brand Ares whose "mission timer" watches are favorites of special ops guys. There is a great podcast with the owner/watchmaker of Ares, Matt Graham on the author Jack Carr's podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/danger-close-with-jack-carr/id1557814875#episodeGuid=f7c25f9c-cd51-11ec-becf-bfebe376f928 Really seems like solid TGN stuff. Thanks for all you guys do!

I’ve been thinking about getting a mesh bracelet for my SKX009. Does anyone know if the Heimdallr bracelets work with the fat spring bars? Thanks.
