Really loved what Sean added to this episode from a health, diet, and fitness standpoint. These are topics lightly grazed/touched in TGN’s past, but I personally would welcome plenty more insight and guests like him! Fantastic episode, guys!!

Really enjoyed this interview. I'm Jason's age and I can't work out like I did years ago. One knee not great, a shoulder that can't push heavy weights like it did 25 years ago. :)

The best shape I was ever in was for a 6-7 year span in my 30s when I was heavily in martial arts, mostly jiu-jitsu/judo. And we overwhelmingly did body weight exercises. To this day I do a ton of push-ups, chin-ups (an under-rated exercise, imho), and body weight squats. A little stationary bike, and a moderate amount of the rowing machine.

Oh, and my fav thing, lots of aggressive hiking with my dog every week. And I couldn't agree more about the need to vary your routine. Getting an active dog might be the best thing to motivate you to get outside and move.

Yeah, my aged cat is not helping my fitness at all! Chalk one up for the dogs! ;)

Guys, this episode was incredible! I’ve been wanting to maintain a healthier lifestyle and fitness is certainly a part of that. As someone who didn’t do too much sports except soccer for fun, I really enjoyed learning and was encouraged by this episode. Thanks for this!

Can't wait to listen. Side note: I have an unworn, unwashed Deep Blue T-tshirt from the Depth Charge shop in size medium. Sorry, wasn't trying to hoard, I'm just between sizes and ordered a medium and large, and kept the large. If anybody is interested, let me know.

dm @andrenbikingdad on the IG to get up with me.

The general rule with Russian postage is allow 3 months. And if you don't already know about the Vostok crown design, it has a clutch mechanism that makes it feel broken if you're not expecting it.

I've had a handful Vostok Amphibias over the last 20 years. I've been meaning to get another, especially as a huge Zissou fan. :)

James, I’ll send you my Vostok Amphibia Zissou model if you want to get your story started.

It actually arrived about 30 minutes after we finished recording! But thanks for the offer.

Can't wait to see which dial you got

I’ve been listening to your podcast for a while now and also following you both on HODINKEE and your appearances on other podcasts. Also I read Depth Charge and really enjoyed it. Just wanted to step in and say this was a stupendous episode. I really enjoyed it very much and I love everything you’ve been doing. Keep up the great work and I’m also really enjoying this substack.

Fantastic episode, great advice. I call my method of eating the "one day diet". Just eat in a way and at the caloric level, you can maintain for the rest of your life. It might take a while longer to lose weight, but it will stay off.

Also, I call myself a social carnivore. I eat mostly vegan at home and then anything when I'm out socially.

Agreeing with everyone else, this was another GREAT episode. Sean is brilliant and his insights into real world health/fitness are appreciated.

Speaking of Bond, I'm wanting to read some of Ian Fleming's Books, is there one anyone would recommend starting with?

The very first one, "Casino Royale" served as a fun start for me reading the novels. If short stories seem like a lighter lift, I very much enjoyed "Octopussy" and "For your eyes only" (Both have pretty much nothing to do with the respective films)

I’m fond of Live and Let Die and Moonraker, but as Andreas suggested, Casino Royale is a good place to start. Enjoy the journey!

Andreas's avatar

In "Live and Let Die" there is a passage on the lume of Bond's dive watch ;-)

+1 for Moonraker. I just finished From Russia with Love, which I would recommend as well. There is a Girard-Perregaux in the beginning chapter.

I love the movies but have never read the books. Apparently I think the Spy Who Loved Me novel has Bond up near Lake George in the Adirondacks? Im heading there in the near future and will have to see if I can find anything specific.

I must say, TSWLM is my least favorite of the books, but would be fun to read in the area in which it's set.

Speedmaster's avatar

A friend who has read them all told me the book is absolutely different from the movie and a little odd

Here's to another great ep! I appreciate the discussion about eating sustainably rather than opting for the slash and burn method espoused so often these days.

Consistently happy to see the notification email letting me know that another ep has dropped. Thanks guys!

I'm excited to hear you've got a Vostok. I have had the Amphibia in light blue with the scuba dude dial since 2013 and I love using it as my daily beater watch. Looking forward to the Hodinkee story soon!

My first episode, I listened to it yesterday (and I've listed to two more since). Great discussion and not good for my serious urge to get a CWC RN diver.
