What an amazing journey, I hope the world allows more of these in the future, gave me a bit of vicarious travel which is sorely needed. Would you guys be open to a ZOOM call-in live field report?
Another fun one. I've had 4-5 Vostoks over the years. And yeah the crown is kinda scary, you're 110% sure the crown will just fall out in your hands. :) But I've read that it's intentional and there's some kind of clutch mechanism maybe? They kind of feel like the Kalashnikov of watches. Terribly crude, not accurate, but effective and long-lasting. Loose tolerances.
yeah it's a clutch to protect the movement from crown impacts. It's one of those rare cases where the Russians went with complicated engineering over the simpler approach of adding crown guards.
I'm excited to hear your take on the Vostok, James. Russian (and then Soviet) watches were the first true watch rabbit hole I went down early in the hobby. I think the best way to appreciate Vostok (especially the classic models like yours) is to think of them as vintage watches that just happen to still be manufactured. I'm pretty sure they're they're still made the same way, with the same machinery, as they were in the 70s and 80s. And in stereotypical Russian fashion, it was always about simplicity and easy maintenance rather than precision engineering. I guess it's like there was still a Datsun factory in Japan pumping out 120Ys.
I've had a Vostok Amphibia for 29 years. Hand wound, wobbly screw down crown, cheap feeling vinyl bund strap that's still going strong. It's never let me down. I've done stunts in it, scuba with it, everything. Things a beast! Fun episode, thanks guys!
Awesome episode and it's always lovely to hear about diving adventures!. Having only taken up the sport last year I haven't dived outside the UK but Bonaire is definitely on my list!
Great episode, glad to have the 'field reports' back! Jason, I like to shoot Kodak Ektar during bright summer days. It has an incredible mid-60s color feel to it. Give it a go next time you're in Bonaire!
Great job again guys. I really enjoyed hearing about Jason's trip. FYI - I noticed Patagonia came out with (what I think is) a new back pack the other day. TGN has chatted a bunch about the Black Hole in the past - this one is the Stealth Pack. It looks pretty cool. I was a little iffy on the Black Hole from an aesthetics standpoint because of the slightly shiny exterior. Just my own taste sort of thing. This new pack seems a little more understated. 30L. Minimal branding. I dig it and I'm thinking it may be worth picking up. Check it out if you get a chance. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Great ep guys. The mention of the gnar Swiss Army knife got me to digging in my knife drawer for my aunt's old Swiss Army Angler. I've had it since she passed in 2009 and now feel inspired to give it a whirl as a daily. Thanks for the inspiration and keep doing what you're doing (and doing so with the best audio quality around!).
Super fun to hear ceviche and pisco sour get mentioned in this episode. Can't get a better beach side combo! But hey, as a Peruvian, I'm biased. On a side note, hope you get the chance to do some trekking on the Andes anytime soon (Inca trail highly recommended).
speaking of cephalopods - you two should definitely watch My Octopus Teacher https://www.netflix.com/title/81045007 if you haven't already. Fascinating look at the relationship between a free diver and an octopus.

And jealous of that Hilux, wish we could get those in the US. :(
There’s something really appealing about a bog standard pick up truck that takes a beating isn’t there
A bit smaller than a Hilux but I feel that the standard Maverick will scratch the itch here in the US

Vostok Amfibia crown feels wobbly but it's really clever piece of engineering. There is more interesting technology related to water resistance in this watch, pretty impressive for the price, you can read about it here: https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/vostok-amphibia-an-analysis-of-design-methodology.491757/

You mentioned a new Victorinox watch release—has it come out yet?

If you haven't yet, I highly recommend reading Manifold: Time by Stephen Baxter. Of Cephalopods, space, and hard science... https://www.amazon.com/Manifold-Time-Stephen-Baxter-ebook/dp/B000FBJF1O/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=manifold+time&qid=1630451085&sr=8-1

Great segment on Bonaire! I really got the feeling of the place. A TGN guided dive trip there? Sign me up!
