On a slight tangent here but each time I hear you guys mention Pelagos I head off to local online sites here in the U.K. to check availability and this time around all the big guns eg Watches Of Switzerland no longer list the 42mm versions. They only display the 39mm and the FXD, which begs the question: is the 42mm being discontinued or about to get an upgrade…?
Great episode guys, I would love to hear more of this format taken in different directions! 1 watch and Q&A episodes are brilliant, thank you as always.
James, I hadn't known about the Unimatic Swiss series until you mentioned it. I took a look and the U1S-M would be so awesome to have. Though, I have to say the U1S-MN would also be pretty cool since it's completely blacked out aside from the hands, dial text, and pip on the bezel. So tempting!
I felt this was a perfect episode to recommend people listen to if they’re new to TGN as it packs a great punch, bit of a greatest hits from a watch content standpoint. But, if you’ve been listening for a while, every pick was super predictable, which just made it a tad underwhelming. Love the idea, but it needed some spice to it, perhaps ruling out watches you already own.
Love the show, guys. Big fan of you both, keep it up!
Good point. I think I could have come up with the list from the boys before the show, and it was a good review. Certainly some good ideas in the chat for future ideas of this type.
A great episode! and it would seem like I have similar tastes to you guys.
I’ve got the D1 blue titanium and it’s just fantastic, and on a titanium bracelet for I’d guess about $300 which is just amazing value. I also have an SPB143 and an earlier version of the 300M. But the one watch I can’t get out of my mind is the U50, fortunately for my wallet they’re on something like a 30 lead time at present 🤷♂️
More like this would be good, maybe narrowing down to non-dive sports watches or some similar category?
The watches you choose maybe be described as „the usuall suspects“. No suprises there, but it its also a testemant to there quality, feel and love you both have for them.
Love this episode! I would also like to see more of your picks in the <20K, <30K, <50K. Or an episode where everything has to be precious metals. Applying James & Jason's taste to luxury watch picks is like you said when VC does a sports watch, they nail it. Please continue. :)
This episode embodies why TGN needs to break off from Hodinkee. TGN is for normal people. EG: I love how going over $2k is a point of diminished returns. Meanwhile the last talking watches for me... was hard to get through on multiple fronts.
Anyway, this was one of my favorite episodes. Well done🙇♂️
Aside from my work with Hodinkee, TGN is entirely separate. The only people calling the shots for TGN are Jason, myself, and the Supporter Crew. - James
Ah, missed that. Still seeing tgn on Hodinkee’s podcast list threw me for a loop I guess.
In either case, both of your editorial contributions are imho the strongest and most inclusive. I love that on top of that y’all are keeping tgn independent.
I really enjoyed this episode and would like to hear more like it. Adding a guest would be good and switching it up by adding more criteria, like no dive watches, would be fun 😂.
I’m very surprised that Tudor didn’t make the cut, given their good value and nice model range.
Here’s my list (already owned):
-under $500: Seiko prospex quartz diver, can’t remember the reference number, but it cost about $130 in 2015.
-under $1,500: Sinn 556 limited edition carnelian red, such a good looking watch.
-under $2,500: Stowa Seatime Black Forest Limited edition, a titanium diver with 70s skin diver looks. I had the rotor customized to read “Vollgas” which roughly translated from German as “pedal to the metal.” I’ve gone down to 40 meters with it.
-under $5,000: Grand Seiko sbgm221, a beautiful dress gmt.
-over $5,000: Habring2 Felix, blue dial, a rare watch from a cool company.
My dream watch is the A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus. Any of the models would do, but since I’m dreaming maybe the white gold, or titanium. But the VC James is a worthy pick.
James: awesome photos and article Cars & Coffee in the Austrian Alps was outstanding, I really got a feel for the event and seeing those cars, wow.
My picks -
Around $500 [eBay] - Certina DS Action Diver 38mm (Black dial)
Under $1,500 - Stowa Flieger Classic 40 (Type A, Black dial)
Under $5,000 - Tudor Black Bay GMT (Pepsi)
Over $5,000 - Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch
Great episode guys!

Very sad if it were to be discontinued
Oh a vintage theme would be fantastic. All picks have to be over 50 years old… let the Cousteau fest begin!

A really fun listen (as always).

Great episode! I definitely support revisiting this theme in various formats.
Great job, this was fun.
$500 - Orient M-Force Automatic
$1500 - Oris Aquis Automatic
$2500 - Tag Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 Automatic
$5000 - Tudor Black Bay 58
$5000+ - Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m
<500$ - NOS Seiko SKX007/009 while supplies last
<1500$ - NOMOS club campus 712, cali dial
<2500$ - Oris Divers Sixty-Five
<5000$ - NOS speedy pro (older 1861 version)
>5000$ - Rolex GMT BLRO oyster
I owned a white dial NOMOS Club Campus. It was a great watch but it wore a lot larger than it should have due to the lugs.

Loved the episode!
Money no object, I would pick up a Titanium Aqua Terra Ultralight at $48,600...
https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watch-omega-seamaster-aqua-terra-150m-co-axial-master-chronometer-41-mm-22092412106001
$500 - CWC Mellor-72 mechanical. I have a close bond with this watch so not sure I could select another with a clear mind.
$1500 - SPB143, first catch, release and immediate regret/re-buy I’ve had.
$2500 - Grand Seiko SBGN003 (would go gray market, and would happily have for sub-5k as well, easily my favorite watch and trusted part of my kit).
$5000 - Tudor Pelagos 39mm
$5k+ - Anything? May as well go all in on that 1 of 7 or something Doxa gold T-Graph. Why not.

Glad you enjoyed it! We will definitely iterate upon the form for upcoming episodes.
