For #222, the TGN boys are thrilled to welcome their friend Asha Wager to the show as a special guest. Asha is a Fire Department Captain, a Hazmat Team Leader, a massive watch nerd, adventure junkie, diver, and all around remarkable person. It’s a great chat that covers her time as a helicopter rappeller, her work fighting wild land fires, how she came to love watches, and what else she does to keep active and entertained.
Awesome episode! It was so fun to hear from a fellow firefighter/ watch nerd and someone I have so much in common with. Asha, you are a complete bad ass and someone I admire. Jason and James, you out did yourselves!!
Wildland firefighting is a fascination of mine. Thanks for the additional insight, Asha!
I thoroughly enjoyed "Only the Brave," tragic story though it is. The memoir of the lone survivor, Brendan McDonough, is a really compelling read.
And for those interested in the history of fighting wildfire, I highly recommend "Young Men and Fire" by Norman Maclean (who also wrote "A River Runs Through it"). After Maclean passed away, his son, John (who is a now-retired Washington D.C. journalist) took up the mantle and wrote several books on wildfire. Also highly recommended.
Same to you. I lived in CA for seven years and know some of the challenges firefighters face and how hard it is for firefighters to find someplace to live in the Golden State.
I love how the guy in the MRE video defines good as not rancid and no numbness or swelling in his mouth. The few times I’ve tried MREs not on the fire line, I realized they just don’t taste good without a fine dusting of dirt and ash, and that I have to be exhausted and hungry. Word to the wise, stay away from the gum.

This was a brilliant episode and captures the essence of TGN. Asha is a hero and deserves far more thanks and kudos than we could ever offer.
Thanks!
