The Grey NATO – 194 – Trading Watches and Cars for Arctic Adventure with Hugh Francis Anderson
You’re all in for a real treat with this episode as Jason and James have some amazing news – TGN will be at Wind Up Chicago in July! – and an outstanding chat with Hugh Francis Anderson. The TGN boys got to know Hugh when he was covering cars and watches but he later made a push into writing and photojournalism specializing in adventure and the environment.
Today, Hugh is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a Contributing Editor for both Oceanographic Magazine and Sidetracked Magazine, and the Adventure Correspondent for I-M Intelligent Magazine (to name only a few of his accolades). In August 2021, Hugh co-led the Jan Mayen 2021 Expedition, a 1,200-nautical-mile scientific communication, and storytelling voyage to summit the world’s northernmost active volcano, Mount Beerenberg, on the centenary of its first ascent. It’s an amazing story (and linked below).
We’ve followed Hugh for a while now so it was really fun to get a chance to have him on the show as he joined Jason and James to chat about the why of adventuring, his recent move to Arctic Norway, some of his best memories from adventuring, and where he plans to go next (hint: it’s wild).
A massive thanks to Hugh for being on the show.

I just got the new Zodiac 53 Skin ZO9213 and I love it! The only bummer is that the beautiful stock bracelet doesn’t adjust small enough for my wrist. I got a Forstner Rivet bracelet to substitute and it’s alright but I wish the stock was usable for me. Really like what Zodiac has been doing lately with color and respecting their design heritage while also evolving it. Zodiac seems to generally fly under the radar on the forums and such so you can find some really awesome deals on them.
Very much looking forward to WindUp! I debating going but now I definitely am knowing TGN will be there. Can't wait!
